The osteopath uses manual manipulation to balance the body’s systems, thereby focusing on the body as a whole as opposed to specific areas. The practice of osteopathy considers all the factors relating to the patient’s lifestyle and health; they have a holistic approach to the person and his body. The patient’s diet and posture are considered and the osteopath bases his advice on all the information he has gathered. This enables them to treat a whole range of injuries and diseases and to assist with pain management.

Osteopaths consider the changes in areas such as muscles, joints, ligaments, bones and other tissue to determine a pattern in the patient’s complaints. A problem with the lower back can for instance cause headaches and in that instance the back and not the neck needs treatment. What they in actual fact do is to find the cause of the pain or discomfort and then treat that in stead of just treating the symptom.

Osteopaths work with the patient and his/her GP in an attempt to find a solution to the problem and the pain. They do not prescribe medication or perform surgery; that is left for the GP to do. Cranial Osteopathy focuses on the health of the head and the influence of the minute movements of the bones in the head on the total health of the individual.
